Tile adhesive calculator

The adhesive quantity is calculated using a consumption rate suited to the product and the intended installation. This calculator applies that value to your area, adds the chosen reserve and counts whole bags.

The consumption must come from the product instructions for the intended installation. Trowel notch size alone cannot give a universal consumption rate.

The calculation estimates quantities; it does not check the substrate, adhesive compatibility, waterproofing or installation method.

Understand the calculation
  1. 4 × 3 = 12 m².
  2. 12 × 3 kg/m² = 36 kg.
  3. With a 10% reserve: 39.6 kg.
  4. 39.6 ÷ 25 kg per bag, rounded up: 2 bags.

The estimate depends on your measurements and entered inputs. PDF output uses your browser’s Save as PDF option.

Start with the product instructions

Look for consumption in kilograms per square metre. It must match the conditions described by the manufacturer. A single notch height cannot predict consumption for all adhesives. The Probau reference cited as a source shows, for example, different values depending on the conditions specified in its product sheet.

Measure the area actually receiving adhesive

Enter the area receiving the same adhesive under the same conditions. Calculate walls, floors or areas with a different consumption rate separately. An undercoat, primer or waterproofing product has its own coverage rate and must not be included in this adhesive mass.

Understand rounding to whole bags

The chosen reserve is added to the theoretical requirement before rounding. Two bags may represent a substantially larger quantity than the result in kilograms. The tool shows both values so you can compare pack sizes. It does not select an adhesive or check its compatibility with the substrate or tile.

The formula
Adhesive in kg = area × consumption in kg/m² × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Bags = calculated mass ÷ mass per bag, rounded up.

12 m² with an entered consumption of 3 kg/m²

The quantity before allowance is 36 kg. With a chosen reserve of 10%, it reaches 39.6 kg. Two 25 kg bags represent 50 kg purchased. The 3 kg/m² rate is a demonstration assumption to replace with your product data.

Details to check

  • Use a consumption rate specific to the product.
  • Keep areas with different conditions separate.
  • Compare the surplus after rounding before adding another reserve.

Frequently asked questions

Can I infer consumption from the trowel alone?

Not universally. Use the manufacturer’s table or method for the intended product and situation.

Is tile grout included?

No. Tile grout is a different product with its own consumption rate and pack size.

The geometric formulas are explained here. For a product, its packaging dimensions and coverage rate remain the reference inputs.
