Record a consistent area
Measure and add the areas to cover. Recesses and small passages are part of the layout. An L-shaped room can be divided into rectangles. Keep each area’s dimensions: they will also help you plan the laying direction and use of offcuts.
Choose an appropriate reserve
A simple room does not create the same offcuts as one with many corners. Quick-Step, for example, distinguishes ordinary rooms from more complex shapes in its quantity guidance. The figure entered here remains your assumption, to adjust using the product instructions and installation plan.
Use the area per pack
Two packs of visually similar products may cover different areas. Copy the square-metre figure instead of basing the purchase only on the number of boards. The tool calculates the total quantity; it does not check the reuse of each offcut or joint spacing between rows.
Area with reserve = area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Packs = this area ÷ m² per pack, rounded up.
An 18 m² room
For an area of 18 m² and a chosen allowance of 8%, the target is 19.44 m². Packs covering 2.20 m² mean buying nine packs, or 19.80 m². The total purchased surplus over the room area is 1.80 m².
Details to check
- Make a separate calculation for each product.
- Compare your intended reserve with the surplus after rounding.
- Keep a photo of the label with your project sheet.
Frequently asked questions
Does underlay need the same quantity?
Its usable area and joins may differ. Calculate it separately from its pack size and instructions.
Is the result suitable for a herringbone layout?
It can convert an area and allowance into packs, but it does not calculate the offcuts for that pattern. Use the product instructions and a suitable layout plan.

The geometric formulas are explained here. For a product, its packaging dimensions and coverage rate remain the reference inputs.
